For the last year Hayden has been vomiting mucus off and on. He'll vomit 2 times a day for about 6 weeks. After about 3 weeks it starts all over again. Every time we begin to address this with his doctors, he ends up having either eye or brain surgery. By the time he is discharged from the hospital, it is weeks until the next cycle begins. He has too many symptoms to go into and we're not sure if we are dealing with one thing or several things, we just know something isn't right. He is refusing most of his feeds again which is concerning on its own. Coupled with the vomiting, we are on constant lookout for signs of dehydration. Very serious for someone his size. Besides, it is heartbreaking to watch him vomit food that he worked so hard to eat and we worked so hard to get him to eat. Something has to be done. We made an appopintment with his pediatrician.
The boys' pediatrician is wonderful. She trusts us enough to know that if we are taking him to see her, something is wrong even if he is smiling, kicking, and jabbering to us. We discussed Hayden symptoms and based on his history the best place to begin looking is in the GI tract. So, the pediatrician made a call to Hayden's gastroenterologist. He is already on Prevacid (acid blocker) for reflux, so the GI doc decided to add Reglan (Hayden's 8th medicine) to help move food through his system so there will hopefully be nothing to vomit. Reglan is cautioned in patients with epilepsy, so we will have to watch him very closely. Another downfall of this med is that it has to be given 4 times per day...big pain!! At least each dose is small. Even though Hayden already has had 2 inconclusive swallow studies, he will be having one more soon. I guess we'll go from there. We are expecting that Hayden will be getting a feeding (G) tube in the near future.
