Glasses, speech, and potty training

Can't believe it's been so long since my last post. Things got really busy at work and I had to work from home a couple of hours every night to keep my head above water. Then, my eyes decided to rebel. I was hoping it was just too much time at the computer coupled with lack of sleep. However, when the computer started getting blurry and I was struggling to read the screen, I figured I probably needed some glasses. I stayed off of the computer except at work to try to see if that helped. When it didn't, I made an appointment to get my eyes examined. Turns out that I am old. Dr. Gist said that I have probably needed glasses for a while, but until now, my eye muscles were strong enough to compensate. Now, that I am old, my eyes just aren't strong enough. I've had my glasses for 3 weeks now and am still getting used to them, but my eyes felt much better the first day I had them on. Now, that my eyes are better I can get this blog caught up. Where to start...

Nicholas has been quite the character as usual. What he isn't getting into, he's climbing on, throwing, or giving to the dog. He's always on the go and won't stop to do anything for more than a few seconds. His 24 month check up went well. Dr. Schutte said that he really has caught up developmentally in every way except for his speech. He is closer to his corrected age of 20 months in that area. Nick will say things out of the blue that you never expected, and doesn't say things that are really easy. For example, I got out his shoes a couple of weeks ago and he said, "go bye bye." What?! Where did that come from? He won't say easy words such as "up," "no," or "down." There are some words that he only says occasionally or once. Other than the speech, we still need to watch his weight. He is only 22lbs 5 ounces and is about 34 inches, so it is getting impossible to find pants that will stay up and are long enough. I need to invent belts for babies and toddlers. I think they'd be a big hit. Thank goodness for summer. The boys are still able to wear the shorts they wore last summer (size 12 months).

We can't believe it, but it seems as if Nicholas is trying to potty train himself. All the months of Nicholas taking off his pants and diaper is really coming in handy. If his diaper is the least bit wet or poopy, his pants and diaper are off in record time, and off to the potty he goes. We sit there and sit there and sit there, but he doesn't go potty. I ask him if he needs to potty more, or if he is all done. He doesn't say all done, but uses the sign to tell me. Hayden's therapists are trying to teach him (so far unsuccessfully) sign language, so I thought I'd teach it to Nicholas, too. He should know what his big brother is saying. After he tells us he's all done, we wash his hands and tell him to go lie down in the living room to get a dry diaper. As he begins to run down the hall, he stops and urinates on the floor (some times he decided to poop) in the hallway (thank goodness it is not carpeted) every single time. As annoying as it is, it is great that he is getting the idea so early. We are doing everything we can to encourage him and never punish him for missing the potty. He is still a great helper around the house. He is now in charge of throwing away diapers, picking up the food he throws on the floor, and wiping up his spills (milk or urine). He loves to do everything big people do. He wants to be big so much. I keep telling him that being big is not always so much fun and that he really doesn't want to grow up too fast. I hope he listens.
This is getting really long, so I'll start a separate post about Hayden.
