New Glasses for Hayden?

As Dr. Trese suggested, as soon as we got home, I called to make an appointment for Hayden to have his eyeglass prescription checked with his opthamologist in Des Moines, Dr. Spencer. She was actually booked until September, but I explained the situation to the receptionist who said she would talk to Dr. Spencer. Next thing I knew, we had an appt with her the following week.

On my way home from work to pick up Hayden, Dr. Spencer's office called to say that there was a cancellation and wanted to know if I could make it by 10:30am. Since it was almost 10:00am and I was only half way to Ankeny, I knew that there was no way to get to the west side of West Des Moines before 10:45am. So, I rushed home dressed Hayden to go (we don't dress Hayden until just before we leave the house due to his reflux.), and the four of us jumped in the van and thought we'd be seen early since we got there 30 minutes early. WRONG! We ended up sitting there watching kids who got there after us go in for their appts. Daddy and Nicholas ran some errands while we were at the doctor's office, so at least we didn't have to worry about keeping Nicholas entertained. Hayden had a great time "talking" to me and playing pat-a-cake. He was getting bored sitting in his stroller, so he started kicking. As we all know, kicking eventually leads to Hayden getting out of breath and breathing so hard he coughs. The cough then leads to vomiting. This time was no exception. Yep, he vomited in the waiting room. Thankfully, I was fully prepared and contained a decent sized vomit in a blanket. Of course, I forgot a sack to put it in, so I carefully wrapped it up and stuck it in my purse. My huge mom purse really comes in handy. I found it kind of sad that everyone pretended not to notice, but there was no way not to hear it. He was really loud. A few minutes after I had the situation all taken care of, the receptionist finally asked me if there was anything she could to. I didn't want anyone to think he was sick, so I explained that he has severe reflux and this happens all the time. Finally, 10 minutes after our scheduled appt time and 40 minutes after we arrived, we were finally taken to an exam room.

Dr. Spencer first worked with him to see if he had had any improvement with tracking objects and she thought he did see the object a couple of times. She tried to examine his retinas to determine if he was in need of a new prescription, but he wasn't really in the mood. She left the room for a few minutes to see if she would have better luck in a little bit. She later returned with a couple ladies to help hold Hayden so she could finish her exam. Luckily, Hayden had fallen asleep. He slept through the entire exam. Dr. Spencer didn't see what Dr. Trese saw. She said the left eye really didn't look that good and wasn't clear enough to examine for a prescription. At the end of the exam, she gave Hayden a prescription that was still a +19, but this time there was nothing listed indicating an astigmatism. So, now we don't know which exam to trust. Dr. Trese didn't get as good of a look as Dr. Spencer, but Hayden's eyes were dilated when Dr. Trese examined them. Could that be the difference? A little discouraged, but we went straight to pick out some new eyeglasses for Hayden. They should be done in about a week. We are keeping our fingers crossed that he will actually wear these glasses.
