Watch out Nicholas...

here comes Hayden! The nurse came by today to do her bi-weekly weight check. Hayden weighed in at 22lbs 4oz!!!! Just to see how close in weight the boys are, daddy weighed Nicholas. He weighed in at 22lbs 9oz. This is the first time since the NICU that the boys were so close in weight. Good bet that Hayden will weigh more than Nicholas when the nurse comes back in 2 weeks. Yay, Hayden! We better find some more healthy, fattening food for Nicholas.

Hayden had a busy day today. He had therapy in the morning, and the nurse came shortly after therapy. Since he had outgrown his AFOs (ankle braces), I took him to ChildServe to meet with his orthotist,Kim, to make casts of his legs to make his new braces. We got there a little early and we were talking to the receptionist when a therapist who was working with a girl, who was about 7, came up to the receptionist and asked for a lollipop. Judy, the receptionist, gave her one. I don't remember if she or the therapist unwrapped it, but the therapist put the wrapper in her left hand and told her to hold it tight with lefty and thow it away. The girl brought her right hand over to assist lefty and her therapist told her that righty couldn't help. Lefty needed to do it alone. That moment made me flash forward a few years. It's likely that we'll be having the same conversation with Hayden for a long time to come. I asked Hayden if he heard all of that. He's not the only one who encouraged to use lefty.

Kim is a really nice lady and remembered that Hayden was a twin. She has 6 yr old twins and knows how crazy things can be. It only took about 20 minutes to make both casts. Hayden sat in my lap just like last time. Only this time he was a lot heavier. It didn't take long before my leg fell asleep. Then, we got to do the fun part...pick out our colors and strap design. Hayden and Nicholas have a favorite book, "How Does a Dinosaur Say Goodnight," that guided the decision. Nicholas always chooses that book first and Hayden laughs through the entire book every time it is read. So, Hayden's new AFOs will have blue and green dinosaurs on a white backround on a blue strap. The foam inside will be green. Yep, kind of wild, but fun. We don't want to hide them, they are part of Hayden and may be for many years. Why not have fun with them? Besides, he will fit in off the shelf ones before long. Not sure what they look like, but I'm sure they are not as cool as the dinosaur ones. Appointment 3 out of the way. Off to appointment #4 to pick up his new glasses.

This was by far his least favorite appt of the day. He cried while they were adjusting his glasses. It's common for kids with glasses as strong as his to not like to wear them. They suggested putting them on him first thing in the morning. His glasses were adjusted in no time even with little cooperation on Hayden's part. I always find it amazing that things like that bother him and then he doesn't always cry for a shot. Off we were with Hayden's new Diego (from Dora the Explorer) glasses. Both boys now have Diego glasses. How cool are they? If only we could get either one of them to actually wear their glasses.
