Nick's Eye Exam

Nicholas had an eye exam today with his opthamologist and we didn't get the news we expected.  We've never really had to worry about Nicholas since he was in the NICU, so I was not prepared to hear that his vision has gotten worse in both eyes and new glasses are needed.  His left eye was a -5.00 (moderately nearsighted) and his right eye was a -11.00 (highly near-sighted).  Now, his left eye is a -11.00 and his right eye is a -14.50.  No wonder the poor child has to put his face just a couple of inches from books, and is a little clumsy.  Hayden has an appointment with his physiatrist in Minnesota on Monday, so it looks like we will go shopping for glasses on Tuesday.  Even though this will be the third pair of glasses we have gotten him 15 months (Hayden has had 2 pairs), I'm sure that I will still  be amazed that a pair of kid's eye glasses can cost nearly $300. Maybe this will be the pair he will wear.  No, I am not really expecting that he will wear them, but I can delude myself for the next few days until we actually bring the glasses home.  The goal is to get him to wear both his glasses and an eye patch on his left eye at the same time, but we are lucky to get one at a time so we just make the most out of it.  Nick is almost old enough for us to begin to bribe him--I mean reward him for wearing his glasses.  Right now, he isn't allowed to read without his glasses and is very good about wearing them while we read to him.  The second he takes him off, the book is put down.  We've had good success with this and are hoping to figure out the next thing to add soon.

  1. Hi Erin,
I've been catching up here with your family. :) I'll have to use the eyeglasses-book rule with Matthew. He's still terible about his glasses.
