Today the boys went to the dentist for the second time. Nick did well, but it was harder for Hayden this time. Nicholas sat in the big chair all by himself until the hygienist began to lower the chair. It scared him to death. He jumped into Daddy's arms in record time. He clearly didn't appreciate someone else brushing his teeth; however, he tolerated it okay. At home brushing Hayden's teeth is a two person job, so it doesn't get done every day since there is usually only one of us here at bedtime. Since brushing is still hard for us to do (and Hayden trusts us), no one else (except for the dentist's office) has tried.
Hayden usually tolerates appointments well, but dental appointments appear to be his least favorite. A stranger sticking a toothbrush in his mouth was very upsetting to him. Poor guy cried harder for that then he does when he gets a shot. Nicholas was concerned about brother and almost cried because his big brother was crying. What a sweet boy. I wanted to hug him at that moment, but I was comforting Hayden. It is so frustrating when I feel like I have to choose one child over the other. Thankfully, Daddy was right there to ease Nick's mind.
Shortly, after everyone was calmed down, the dentist came in. Nick's teeth look great. He has his 3 year molars coming in. He did pretty well with the dentist looking into his mouth. She was able to get a good long look. Good job of brushing, little buddy!!
The dentist said that Hayden has several teeth coming in. Some on each side. The teeth on the left side are closer than the right. We had noticed that Hayden has been drooling lately, so we had guessed that some teeth were coming in. While she had his mouth open, Hayden had trouble swallowing all of the saliva that was pooling in his mouth and he gagged on it. I'm not sure how, but we barely avoided a vomit. Hayden's teeth look okay, too. Since he does not take food orally, when he is about 6 or 7 she will probably put him under anesthesia to get x-rays and clean his teeth. Looks like anesthesia will be a regular part of life for Hayden. To date, Hayden has been under anesthesia 16 times. Even though he has had no problems with it so far, each time I worry about him. I am guessing that that will never change.
