Thursday night, after I got off of work, we packed up the boys and headed north. Nicholas was staying with Grandma and Grandpa Smith while we took Hayden up to St. Paul, MN for his phenol and Botox injections. I hated that Nicholas didn't go with us, but he would have been bored out of his mind. Spending time at Grandma and Grandpa's was a much better option for him.
Luckily, there was a restaurant in the parking lot of our hotel. Tony went over there to get dinner for us. We offered to get Hayden anything he wanted, but he just said "na na na." I ordered a wonderful hamburger called the Triple Bypass Burger. It has a fried egg on the top. Sounds strange, but it was sooooo yummy! Just before we stuffed ourselves, we watched the UNI Panthers win a second NCAA tournament game. Another game that came down to the last shot. Way to go Panthers!!
By 7am Friday morning, we were checked into he hospital waiting to go back to the operating room. Phenol injections must be precise since it is killing a nerve. Gillette has a great tracking system in the OR waiting room. Each patient is given an ID that can be followed on a monitor in the waiting room. This way, one always knows where his/her child is. After a couple of hours in pre-op, Hayden was taken to the OR so the injections could be administered. It took about 45 minutes, but it seemed an eternity as always. Once Hayden was in recovery, we were able to see him. Poor guy was fussy, so we knew he was in pain. He is not a fussy child. The nurse gave him something for the pain. After he was calm, we were moved back into the room we were in pre-op. He was still a little fussy, so I gave him a teaspoon of water orally with a syringe. Once we were comfortable taking him, we were allowed to leave.
A couple of hours later, we picked Nicholas up and headed home. Hayden handled the ride home very well. I was a little nervous about how he would handle it, but he was a champ as always. It must have hurt to have to sit for four hours on legs that just had dozens of injections. I don't think that I could have done it. Every day he amazes me more.
